Default Is religion a competitive advantage - evolutionarily speaking?

The tendancy to believe the stories of the past (i.e. don't eat that berry) kept our ancestors alive at a time when information was only passed on orally. Is this characteristic (believing what we are told without questioning) a competitive advantage? If so - has it outgrown its usefullness?
