Default What are some household items that could be carried around as defense weapons?

I live on a university campus, and I've heard about crimes around the area but it didn't really sink in until recently when my friend was mugged at a bus stop. I walk around the campus at night a lot and now I want to start carrying something around with me regularly. I don't want to have a gun, and I'd prefer not to carry a knife around regularly. My dad used to keep a 2 pound dumbbell in his car and sometimes bring it with him, but that would be annoying to carry around. I suppose I could buy a can of pepper spray but what are some common items that are easily carried in your pocket that could be used as weapons?I forgot to add the detail that I'm a guy so I don't have a purse...

The average woman's purse is a virtual arsenal. For starters, a rat-tail comb can be used as a serviceable dagger. Placing pocket change inside a hanky or glove creates an improvised blackjack. A ring of keys can be used to gouge. A roll of coins helps to stiffen and reinforce a fist. Hairspray sprayed at a face is almost as effective as mace; combined with a cigarette lighter, you've got a handy flamethrower. The best defense, however, is to be aware of your surroundings; if possible, avoid dimly lit areas, if you see a stranger, cross the street, and always plan your path so that you have an escape route.

Get a trial size of spray deodorant with aluminum chlorhydrate in it--makes a great MACE. Roll up a newspaper, tightly, and carry it with you--use the end (not the long part, the very end of the rolled up paper) and shove it in the throat of an attacker. It's like hitting 'em with a log, dead on. If anyone grabs you, step on their instep and then knee 'em in the nuts. Good luck--stay safe.

"I don't want to have a gun"Well, in the end you'll have to make the decision about which you want more. Do you want to defend yourself more or do you want to avoid carrying a firearm more?
