You don't say whether you live in a house, apartment, or some other type of building. You should be able to find a water meter someplace. It has a digital readout showing how much water has gone through it. Your water utility uses this to determine how much you owe. Some apartments and condos might have one meter for several units, which makes your job more difficult. The two other ways of measuring water usage: 1. Intercept it at the sewer line and measure it. This will be expensive and messy. It won't include water that doesn't go down the drain, but most water does eventually go down the drain.2. Measure how much water you use from each sink, toilet, shower, and laundry. You might be able to reasonably estimate this figure. For example, put a 5-gallon bucket in your shower and run the shower for 5 minutes. How much water have you collected? How much water does a 7-minute shower use?
