Default What are some educational activities that might keep my autistic son occupied...

...while I do housework, etc.? My son is almost thirteen and has autism; he is nonverbal. I have been homeschooling him for two and a half years. He is still learning basic skills on about a preschool level. The homeschooling has been going well, he has made some advances, but I feel like I am wasting time trying to teach him shapes and colors when he is almost thirteen; I feel like he needs to be learning things to improve his life and make him more independent in whatever ways possible, like how to prepare food, or bathe himself. I face the two obstacles of having to show the school board each year that he is learning something, and that I am pretty much completely alone in his care, plus I have a new baby. Whenever I have to be busy with housework or the baby, my son is bored. He doesn't watch TV or videos, and cannot read. Anyone who has any experience with autism or homeschooling, I would appreciate any suggestions.

try sensory items out. people with autism usually enjoy sensory stimulation. Those are things that stimulate the senses such as soft toys or a blanket or objects with different textures. Different smells, sounds (music, soothing voices, a gurgling fountain). For his sight, things that light up or a kalidescope. Just be sure to work with him on it as you wouldn't want him to become over stimulated
