| Trust yourself and your body. Stay calm and remember that the pain is positive and not anything to be afraid of. Don't be afraid to get an epidural if you truly feel you need one. Breathe!

| First of all, why is your doctor inducing labor? Second of all why didn't you take birthing classes? It's difficult to explain how to control labor when you haven't practiced anything. Here's my suggestion. You probably won't take it, but I'll give it a shot. Don't get induced. Don't take any medication at all. Have a natural birth and breast feed your kid. Oh. and use cloth diapers while you are at it. They are cheaper and cleaner for the environment.

| A old male talking. lol. Take that epidural. Was told it really helps. On that breathing and counting and classes, that's all a bunch of hooey. By nature, you've already got the timing built in. Make sure everyone is out of the room except those you feel comfortable with. Tell the nurses and doctor that your going to "groan". Yes "groan"; where you make that low pitch moaning sound when you have pain. Your breathing and everything will be "perfectly" timed, automatically. No counting or any of that cr*p.

| Make sure you have ice chips, gum, CHAP STICK or anything else that will keep your lips and mouth wet. All the breathing will dry your lips very quickly. You can feel a contraction come on. It gets more intense and then you can feel it come down... You can take in 3 short breaths and let out 3 short breaths. If it helps. For me I just kind of grip something. Take a long deep breath and let it out slowly. Like I would with bad menstrual cramps...You can move. Anyway you want. You can sit on a birthing ball. Lean over a chair, the bed or your coach... When it comes to pushing you can squat for that. If you have help... The gravity will help expel the baby.Don't wear yourself out screaming. Moan instead... The nurse will be able to help you out a lot. Ask questions. If you don't understand something, have someone explain it.There are a lot of medications to help take the edge off the contractions... Demerol is nice in the active labor phase. I also had an epidural. The thing to remember is that you have to sit still for about 10 minutes... Your coach or nurse can help you with that too... The anesthesiologist KNOWS what they are doing!!! Don't be scared!!! This is what your body is supposed to do. Your body helps you too. They don't have you push until you are 10 cm. Then you push during contractions. The baby does it's part in inching down too. You all work together...

| When you go to the hospital be sure and tell the nurses that you haven't had any classes concerning labor and delivery and ask them please to let you know what you should be doing. I am an old OB nurse.Remember you need to breath through a contraction. The lack of breathing oxygen makes any pain you have worse. When you feel a contraction starting take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Don't fight your body. If you fight the contractions your labor will be longer and harder. Find something to focus on to get yourself in a bit of a zen state if mind.Often yelling or screaming makes things worst. Although there are times you need to.When you breath through a contraction make your mouth like you are going to have a french kiss. For some reason the brain translates that to other parts of the body that are holes..Such as peeing etc.The best advice is to imagine what is happening. The way I explain it is......you need to thin and open up your cervix so that the baby can come out. When you are a ten the baby is just about there. I have my patients visualize this Think about a basket ball. you need to push it out of a thick sock (where the toe part is gone)See this in your brain. as you push the ball through see how the sock thins so that it can stretch to be wide enough to push through that basket ball. In your mind tell your brain that this is what you are doing. Another visual is a thick turtle neck sweater that you are shoving a soccer ball through the turtle neck. There is a period of time which is called the transitional phase of labor. Often women feel frantic and like they just want to crawl out of their skin. Actually this is good becasue after that the contractions often arn't as bad, they are starting to actually push the baby out. Some women choose to have a spinal block of some kind. If you do that you will not feel a thing. And I wouldln't miss that incredable feeling of pushing that baby out. By that time there is so much pelvic pressure that you are numb and doesn't hurt as much as you realize it would. It is ok to take some medication, but not too much or the baby and your contractions slow down. Enjoy this experience It is the most amazing thing that a woman will do in their life. And holding and seeing that little one makes all the pain worth it's while.Being induced you might go faster than if you started labor on your own. And most of all, They call it Labor because it is a great deal of work.God Bless
