All I can offer is what my Mother told me when I asked her a very similar question. She told me that the bible says "Marriage" was a gift from God to Man and Woman. Therefore, marriage is for heterosexuals. As far as she is concerned, gays can be in committed relationships and share a committed "Union", but not marriage. I accept that, partly because she's my Mom and what are you gonna do? and partly because that's okay with me, I don't need to call my committed relationship a "marriage" when the phrase "committed union" works just as well for my partner and me. People are going to argue about semantics forever. Take the word "marriage" away and they'll just find something else to argue about. It's human nature.
